Clay Field in Therapy

Clay Field in Therapy

Working with the Clay Field

As part of my work as a Gestalt therapist and art therapist in Brisbane and online, I sometimes integrate work with the Clay Field, a gentle, body-based and sensory approach using clay, water, touch, and movement.

Developed by Professor Heinz Deuser in Germany and further developed by Cornelia Elbrecht in Australia, the Clay Field invites attention away from overthinking and into direct sensory experience. As the hands begin to move and explore, something new can emerge, often bringing greater grounding, vitality, emotional connection, and embodied awareness.

Working with clay helps activate many parts of the nervous system, not only the cognitive thinking mind. Through touch, rhythm, sensation, and movement, people can reconnect with feeling, creativity, and a more fully felt sense of themselves.

You do not need to be an artist. The focus is not on creating something to take home, but on allowing experience to unfold through touch, movement, and sensory awareness.

Often something meaningful begins to emerge through the hands before it can fully be understood in words.
